The Challenge
  • The site is significantly inaccessible to most users, either in legibility or in navigating the site structure. Users spend less than 2 minutes before quitting the site.
  • Unappealing color palette and visuals.
  • CTAs are not clear and do not help guide users to their intended destinations.

The client's goal is to drive up adoption rates and increase volunteers in the shelter and at events by 30%.

I was looking to adopt a cat and found myself overwhelmingly frustrated with the local shelter websites. Through user interviews, I saw how potential volunteers and new pet owners miss crucial information from the original site or not even bother to dig for it.

From the homepage, users can now quickly select the pet they are searching for, reducing the amount of clicks therefore increasing their immediate satisfaction with the site.

To reduce that time the user's spend searching across the site, I reorganized the main and utility navigation, as well as the homepages, to provide the site's most frequented links to the user. This eliminates the ambiguity and confusion previously experienced.

Responsive Web Pages

The focus of this renovation is to bring legibility and intuition to adoption websites, which includes a fluid responsive state. My goal is to have the screens seamlessly morph into one another when hitting their respective breakpoints.

Information Architecture
The Information Architecture is the root of the user's issue with the site.

So, what did I fix?

  • Simplified the site map.
  • Consolidated each important anchor link into its respective category.
  • Added resources to the main navigation that were hidden in the footer.
  • Restructured the individual web pages to seamlessly flow into one another.

A little personality goes a long way
No matter the user's age, in every test each user gave exponentially more positive feedback for experiential sites that not only were fun to see but also gave more information on the animal they were looking at.

Style Guide
Solution:
  • Eliminate unnecessary pages, anchor links, and images.
  • bring key anchor links and information to the main pages and into the main navigation.
  • Curated a clear Design System and design hierarchy throughout the site.
  • Create CTAs and typography choices that had all users in mind: large and easy to read.
  • Update and standardized the color palette to define a clear brand for the shelter that feels welcoming and clean.
